It is really exciting to disembark from the plane in Kathmandu – in the foot hills of the Himalayas
Kathmandu is a vibrant city. Your senses are almost overwhelmed by the abundance of colours, sounds, fragrances and other stimuli.
We discover the city’s wonderful cultural and artistic heritage in hidden temples with court yards overflowing with calendulas. Peppers and rice are being dried in the court yards, contributing to the unique atmosphere in the temples. Many of the small shops are unchanged since the Middle Ages.
No visit to Kathmandu is complete without a stroll through the winding and narrow streets of Thamel, dubbed the tourist centre of Kathmandu. The streets are crammed with shops and vendors, selling almost everything under the sun. You can also taste traditional Nepalese food, as well as continental food in one of the many restaurants.
At the KathesimbhuStupa, or Jiadexinbu Pagoda, you will see thousands of colourful prayer flags, as well as interesting Ugratara Temple, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Agratara. This temple has a very interesting roof structure.
The next destination is the traveller’s delight. India is a dramatic land, overflowing with culture, religion, knowledge, history and tradition – a dream come true for the serious traveller. The dramatic diversity takes one’s breath away.
In earlier times several important trade routes passed through India, making it a very wealthy country.
What is awaiting the Seagull Traveller in India?
The Taj Mahal, of course. This breathtakingly beautiful marble building is a mausoleum to a beautiful woman, built in her memory by a devoted husband.
Then we move on to the Rajastan Province to visit the Capital Jaipur. The buildings in this city is plastered in pink, hence “the pink city”. Be careful in the streets for the multitude of scooters, rickshaws and children playing cricket.
Amberfort is visited on the back of an elephant! Inside the fort you will find a number of palaces. The interior of these palaces will impress you with the delicate decorations in typical Mogul style.
It is time to move on. Udaipur, the white city, the city on the lakes, the Venice of the East, is our next port of call. Here we will visit the floating Lake Palace on one of the larger lakes in the city.
Our visit to India is concluded in Delhi. We will visit the many markets in the old city on rickshaw, and we will enjoy the spicy food of India with the new friends that we have made on this wonderful Seagull Tour.
