What to expect

Itinerary

Day 1
Depart from Johannesburg

We meet at O.R. Tambo International and depart for Victoria Falls Airport, Zimbabwe. We are met on arrival and transferred to Hwange Halfway House, where we hop into a safari vehicle and continue our journey with an enroute game drive through Hwange National Park, a vast and untamed landscape teeming with life. In the evening, we arrive at Bomani Tented Lodge, where we are greeted by views of the lodge’s waterhole and the Zimbabwean wilds. Listen for elephants frolicking in the water after dark as you drift off to sleep tonight.

Day 2
Discovering Hwange

Awake to the sounds of the bush at Bomani Tented Lodge. A campfire is lit each morning overlooking the waterhole, and guests are invited to sip their coffee fireside while watching the sunrise. Today, discover Hwange with Bomani’s safari activities. Perhaps you’ll take a game drive or a walking safari, or maybe you’ll join a community visit to see the local village and school. You might sit in the lodge’s hide or venture out on a night drive. The elephant is the emblem of Hwange, and in September, the peak of the dry season, they form an endless procession to the waterholes, sometimes congregating in their hundreds to quench their thirst, a must-see sight. When you return to the lodge this evening, gather for dinner and share stories of your day.

Day 3
All Aboard the Elephant Express

After breakfast, we depart from Bomani to board the Elephant Express. This single-car train is an unlikely safari vehicle but offers an utterly original experience. Kitted out with open sides, teak tables and comfortable chairs, the train rattles through the elephant-laden plains towards Dete Station as we sip on drinks and enjoy snacks. On the way, we might see grazing giraffes, herds of kudu or lions dozing on the tracks. Our 80-kilometre journey ends in Dete, where we are met at the station and transferred to A’Zambezi River Lodge, a charming hotel set on the banks of the mighty river. In the evening, we set out on a sunset cruise of the Zambezi, the body of water which traces the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. We soak up the last rays of the African sun on the Upper Zambezi with the mist and noise of Victoria Falls in the background.

Day 4
Victoria Falls

After breakfast at the lodge, we set out for a guided tour of Victoria Falls. The local name for the falls is Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “the smoke that thunders.” Long before seeing the falls, the sound of millions of litres of water tumbling over sheer rock can be heard. A thin mist hangs in the air, creating tiny rainbows that mark the spot of one of nature’s greatest spectacles. During the dry season, the flow of water is not as powerful as in the rainy season, but this allows us to see the rock formations and geology of the falls. We marvel at the beauty of the world’s largest waterfall before continuing to Chobe Safari Lodge. Neighbouring the Chobe National Park, the lodge has unrestricted views of the Chobe River. As you sit down to dinner, keep your eyes on the far bank for elephants or water buffalo coming down to the river for a drink.

Day 5-6
Safari in Chobe

The following two days will be spent discovering the unspoilt wilderness of Chobe National Park by land and river. Chobe National Park was Botswana’s first national park, and it boasts the biggest concentration of wildlife in Africa. The Chobe River is an oasis in a dry and sometimes desolate region, a lifeline to the large herds of elephants and buffalo that frequent its banks. Sable antelope, giraffe, kudu and roan antelope can be spotted coming down to drink, while lions and leopards can be glimpsed in the forest that borders its banks. Cast your gaze a little further, and you’ll discover a birding paradise of fish eagles, lilac-breasted rollers, and hand kingfishers. At the lodge, we enjoy delicious meals, swims in the pool and sundowners on the deck. After your dinner, head outside into the night. September in Chobe usually brings cloudless skies and the opportunity for spectacular stargazing.

Day 7
Back to Jozi

After breakfast, we are transferred to Kasane Airport for our flight to O.R. Tambo International. A week in the bush may sound fleeting, but the sights and sounds of Africa leave an indelible mark on the soul. As you return to routine, we hope the spirit of Hwange, Vic Falls and Chobe stay with you. Seagull Travel & Tours looks forward to sharing another African adventure with you soon.

Experience the vibrance of Hwange, Victoria Falls and Chobe

Discover the unspoilt wilderness of Hwange National Park, Victoria Falls and Chobe National Park

Beginning in Zimbabwe, our journey starts in the magnificent Hwange National Park. Zambezi teak forests and vast savannahs form the backdrop to our explorations. Arriving in the dry season, we are rewarded with vast herds of elephants and other animals congregating around the waterholes and creating a spectacle as they quench their thirst in the otherwise arid landscape.

Then, it’s all aboard the Elephant Express! This rail car provides a one-of-a-kind safari experience. We click-clack our way through the bush, leaning over the train’s open sides to spot giraffe, eland, kudu or maybe lion. Next, we take a cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, watching as the enormous African sun slips below the horizon.

We make the pilgrimage to Victoria Falls to marvel at its beauty and power before ending our tour in Chobe, Botswana. On the banks of the river, we see crocodiles lounging open-jawed in the sun and elephants frolicking in the water. The bush noises of birds calling, buffalos snorting, and hippos breaching the surface of the water fill our ears.

With this small group safari tour, Seagull shows you two of Africa’s most captivating national parks. Charming safari lodges, expert wilderness guides, opportunities for game viewing, relaxing, and cultural encounters with the local community combine in an unforgettable safari experience.

FAQs

We are here to help

The tour leader collects a set amount from each member of a tour. This kitty is then used to tip the local tour guide and city guides, bus drivers, any other assistants, and restaurant staff. We believe in tipping for good service as a token of appreciation, especially as many workers in tourism rely on tips to supplement their income.

Although we cannot apply on your behalf, we are more than willing to give guidance and assistance with completing forms. We do this for many clients on a near-daily basis. It does, however, remain the responsibility of the client to ensure that they get the correct visa on time.

Remember that we limit the number of guests on our tours. This means more time at stops and sites. We definitely do not do groups of 30 pax, where guests are rushed from one site to the other. There is enough time to explore on your own.

We always suggest USD/Euro 50 to USD/Euro 100 per person per day. As we mostly include two meals per day on our tours, this will be enough for lunch/dinner, some snacks, and memento shopping. Should you want to buy larger items, we suggest taking along your credit card. Remember to advise the bank that you will be travelling.
