What to expect

Itinerary

Day 1
Depart from Johannesburg

We meet at O.R. Tambo International for our flight to Lusaka, Zambia. This landlocked country lies in the heart of Africa. Slightly off the beaten track, it is known for its pristine scenery and diverse wildlife. On arrival, we are taken to a boutique hotel in the city’s leafy suburbs. We share a welcome lunch and spend the rest of the day enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of the hotel.

Day 2-4
Wild and Untouched South Luangwa

After breakfast, we are transferred to the airport for our flight to Mfuwe, a town on the border of the South Luangwa National Park. Fanning out from the banks of the Luangwa River, the park is one of the most majestic in Africa. We explore the park with morning and afternoon game drives, returning to the warm hospitality of our luxurious lodge to rest, relax and dine in style. Tonight, fall asleep to the soft splash of hippos in the river and hyenas cackling in the distance.

Day 5
Malawi: The Warm Heart of Africa

After breakfast, we depart from the lodge for Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi. This small country at the southern end of Africa’s Great Rift Valley is best known for its crystalline lake, green, productive land and friendly people. Smiling faces and warm hospitality lie around every corner, earning Malawi the nickname the “Warm Heart of Africa.” This evening, we stay at a welcoming lodge nestled within a 650-hectare forest reserve and surrounded by lush gardens.

Day 6 - 7
Majete: A Reborn Wilderness

After breakfast, we set out for Majete Wildlife Reserve in south-west Malawi. Within Majete’s undulating hills, grassy plains and dense forests lies an incredible story of conservation and regeneration. Before 2003, almost all wildlife in Majete had been eradicated, but thanks to African Parks, the Majete law enforcement team and the local community, the park is now a haven for wildlife. Thousands of animals were moved here, including elephants, buffalos, rhinos and lions, and they now thrive in this breathtaking reserve alongside a wealth of other species.

Day 8 - 9
Liwonde: Africa’s Hidden Jewel

Today, we depart for Liwonde National Park. The park’s palm-lined waterways are filled with crocodiles and hippos. Monkeys swing in the trees overhead as elephants, buffalos, black rhinos and antelope graze below. As part of its regeneration effort, African Parks has steadily been reintroducing predators like cheetahs, lions, leopards and hyenas to the park with great success and increasing numbers.

When we’re not enjoying our sumptuous lodge, we’ll explore Liwonde with morning and afternoon game-viewing activities. 4×4 game drives show us the interior of the park while rewarding boat safaris take us along the Shire River.

Day 10 - 12
From Bush to Beach Retreat

We leave Liwonde National Park and set course to Lake Malawi for a two-night post-safari beach break. We stay at an idyllic retreat tucked away on a private island. Relax at the lodge, kayak on the lake or go snorkelling in the azure waters surrounding the island. Hundreds of colourful cichlid fish, nearly all endemic to Lake Malawi, cluster around rocky outcrops just beneath the surface. After days filled with sunshine, relaxation and good food, fall asleep to the gentle sounds of waves lapping the lake shore.

Experience the vibrance of Zambia & Malawi

As the red sun slips below the horizon, a cacophony of bird song fills the air, insects chirp and a campfire crackles. A cold drink sweats in your hand as ice jingles and clinks against the glass. From the darkness, you hear the snort of a hippo and the distant roar of a lion. This is Africa – primal, enchanting and utterly addictive.

FAQs

We are here to help

The tour leader collects a set amount from each member of a tour. This kitty is then used to tip the local tour guide and city guides, bus drivers, any other assistants, and restaurant staff. We believe in tipping for good service as a token of appreciation, especially as many workers in tourism rely on tips to supplement their income.

Although we cannot apply on your behalf, we are more than willing to give guidance and assistance with completing forms. We do this for many clients on a near-daily basis. It does, however, remain the responsibility of the client to ensure that they get the correct visa on time.

Remember that we limit the number of guests on our tours. This means more time at stops and sites. We definitely do not do groups of 30 pax, where guests are rushed from one site to the other. There is enough time to explore on your own.

We always suggest USD/Euro 50 to USD/Euro 100 per person per day. As we mostly include two meals per day on our tours, this will be enough for lunch/dinner, some snacks, and memento shopping. Should you want to buy larger items, we suggest taking along your credit card. Remember to advise the bank that you will be travelling.
